A
new way to combine the components of typical storage firing
coal mill systems into a compact structure, saving on space,
building cost, mill-to-dust collector and related duct lengths,
rotating parts and explosion protection equipment.
by Vincent Grosskopf, Thorwesten Vent GmbH, Beckum, Germany
|
| This presentation
deals with the reduction of investment and operational cost
by introducing innovative technological improvement in terms
of both process- and safety related issues, combined. The improvement
basically stems from building such plant in a more compact configuration,
by integrating a number of beneficial design improvements on
the way. Since the new configuration doesn’t ask for major changes
in the process all key equipment of which coal mill systems
consist, with the exception of the process filter and in some
cases the min fan, will be used as usual. |

Explosion
vents are a protective means of last resort. How must the constructional
protective technique explosion venting for silos in the industry
be applied? |
| This publication
describes explosion venting as one of the techniques of constructional
explosion protection of silos and reaches the conclusion that
experts don’t deal with fire and explosion protection as closely
related issues. The differences between the use of self-reclosing
and non-reclosing explosion vents are explained. And examples
of non-justifiable differences in approach of silo related explosion
protection which can be seen in different industries are given.

Symposium on Hazards, Prevention and Mitigation of Industrial
Explosions held in Bourges, France, October 2002. |

Explosion
protection for coal grinding plant. What should really be done?
|
| The text includes a compilation
of the presently applicable guidelines for explosion protection
by means of explosion venting, with reference to VDI 3673, NFPA
85 and NFPA 68. Title: Explosion protection for coal grinding
plant. What should really be done? The paper was originally
published as presentation for the AFCM 17th Symposium & Exhibition,
June 2000, one of the established regular events for the cement
industry. Summary: After showing the various difficulties with
guideline compliance engineers will face a logical and practical
approach is described. |
